Welcome to Year 5 News

Everything you need to know and more...

In Year 5 we are exploring many aspects of life during the Victorian era with a focus on how the lives of local people have shaped Grimsby and Cleethorpes. We have explored the timeline of the era and have asked questions about how important Queen Victoria’s reign was in creating laws and values in Britain today. In year 5 we have encouraged the children to enquire about history using artefacts from the era to extend their knowledge and understanding of everyday life. We have explored different types of schooling and jobs. We will be learning about the importance of the railways and their impact on the local fishing industry and the industrial revolution. We will be going on a local visit to Normanby Hall to enrich our understanding of home and farm life.

Everything you need to know and more...

This autumn term, year 6 are delving into the exciting history of both World War One and World War Two. So far, we have discovered why WW1 started through drama and investigation. We have learnt about life in the trenches and written letters from the perspective of soldiers and nurses on the front line. We are using our inquiry skills to unpick the decisions of important people during both wars and looking at how WW2 affected people as well as the impact of crucial events had on aspects of war such as society, morale and progress. We are learning to empathise with people from the past and understand people’s thoughts, feelings and decisions using primary and secondary sources. We are looking forward to a trip to the Holocaust Museum as well as a DT week based on war time food.
